As the incoming president for 2007/2008, I am pleased to note that many of the goals which we originally strived for during the formation of IPDM have been achieved due to the hard work and selfless dedication of many members of the Institute. One of these, it was felt then that there was a need to raise the profession of interior design to the same level as the other allied building professions since anyone could call themselves ”interior designers” offering a free-for-all range of services from interior decoration to contract works and interior consultancy.
Professions control the training and evaluation processes that admit new persons to their field, and in assessing whether the work done by members is up to a certain standard. Professionals are expected to utilize their independent judgement and professional ethics in carrying out their responsibilities. Typically a professional provides a service in exchange for a fee or a salary, in accordance with established protocols for registration, licensing, ethics, procedures, standards of service, training and certification.
nterior design is the process of shaping interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in additional to traditional decoration.
A Registered Interior Designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design who creatively analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, defines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents.
The profession of Interior Design is now regulated by an amendment to the Architects Act in 2007 and only those persons who are properly qualified can be called Interior Designers. The public can therefore now expect a high degree of professionalism when they deal with registered Interior Designers.
IPDM is now poised to progress towards unification of the profession and it is hoped that with the cooperation of all parties involved, we shall succeed within this Council year.
I congratulate all members of Council who were elected into office this year and in closing wish to thank the outgoing President and Council for their invaluable contributions to the Institute. I also call on Members to come forward and take part in the affairs and functions of the Institute.
